Energy efficient construction is designing and building custom homes that optimize energy performance and reduce environmental impact. ENERGY STAR certified homes are built by licensed builders certified under the ENERGY STAR for New Homes program and verified by a third-party energy advisor. More than 100,000 new homes in Canada have been certified under this program.

Net Zero or Net Zero Ready Homes

These homes are outfitted or planned to be (in the case of Net Zero-Ready Homes) with renewable energy systems like solar panels and have been tested and inspected to make sure they meet the requirements of a net zero home. Our CHBA Net Zero Homes provide up to 80% more energy efficiency than base level code-built homes and provide a higher indoor experience due to superior comfort and sustainability.

ENERGY STAR Certified Homes

Our high performance homes consume at least 20% less energy than typical homes built to meet minimal Ontario Building Code. They are independently evaluated by a Government of Canada-approved advisor and are awarded an ENERGY STAR certification after they have passed the inspection. Measurement Method #1:

The Blower Door Test.

This test is mandatory for any home that will be labeled ENERGY STAR, CHBA Net Zero, or Net Zero Ready certifications. The blower door test measures how airtight a building’s envelope is using a fan to test air leakage. All our homes pass through this test, which is done independently by licensed professionals and qualified energy advisors. When we present your new or renovated home to you, we provide records of these tests and their results. This way you can be certain that there is proof that your home was tested and qualifies as an energy efficient home.

The results of the blower door test in addition to the permanent labels and certifications is your assurance.

The EnerGuide Rating

Measurement Method #2:

The EnerGuide Rating

This second guarantee is an assurance test we choose to conduct on ENERGY STAR certified homes to prove how efficient your home is. While EnerGuide testing is not required for ENERGY STAR certification, it is mandatory for CHBA Net Zero and Net Zero Ready homes.

The EnerGuide Rating measures a home’s energy consumption and production and is mandatory for net zero homes. The rating used is gigajoules per year. The lower the reading is on the scale, the more energy efficient the home is. Since this is done by a third-party inspection, it adds credibility to the results. Testing is done onsite to make sure that homes labeled ENERGY STAR certified meet the strict standards that come with that classification.

A standard new home typically uses 100 to 200 gigajoules per year (GJ/year). This is based on the size of the home, type of home, location, construction quality, and its HVAC system and how well it is maintained over the years.

The fact that our service to identify harmful substances in old homes is used every time by Avvio so that the substances can be removed correctly is proof that they are aware of environmental laws and care about the community and their workers. Some others try to get away with not doing this to save money in time putting those exposed to them during the demolition and removal process at risk. Also, their project schedules are realistic, and they are easy to work with so I can definitely recommend them.

We have been providing electrical services to Avvio for over 10 years now. We have a lot of experience working with Vincent, Paul and their team. They are very organized and professional. Their scheduling is always on time and work sites are clean and safe. Their design package includes a detailed electrical plan, making our job easier and eliminating the chance of mistakes.
